Undescended Testicle
An undescended testicle refers to the condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum, their normal position, after birth. Normally, during embryonic development, testicles reside inside the abdomen and typically descend into the scrotum before birth. However, in some cases, this descent does not occur completely, and the testicle remains in a different location or within the abdomen.
Undescended testicle is often detected during physical examination or routine postnatal check-ups. This condition can increase the risk of infertility, testicular cancer, and other health issues in males later in life.
Treatment typically involves surgery, aiming to bring the testicle down into the scrotum. This procedure is crucial for the normal development and function of the testicle. However, in some cases, complete descent of the testicle may not be possible, and testicular removal (orchiectomy) may be necessary.
If undescended testicle is not diagnosed and treated during childhood, it can increase the risk of infertility and testicular cancer in adulthood. Therefore, early detection during postnatal routine checks and appropriate treatment are essential.
